John R. Semper, affectionately known as “Semp”, was born on June 21, 1946, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, to Carol Hendley (Skinner) and James Semper. He passed away unexpectedly on August 25, 2025, at the age of 79.
John leaves behind his beloved wife of 58 years, Linda (Bolden) Semper of Brockton, and a large, loving family. He is survived by his children Lisa (Eric), Jolie’ (Douglas), Troy (Madalena), and Courtney. His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren—Jasmine, Troy, Jelani, John, Shannon, and Maleia—and his great-grandchildren Aria, Preshon, Presleigh, and Kalani. He is also survived by his siblings Charlotte Morris and Rodney Semper; siblings-in-law Ife, Richard, and Robert; and many nieces and nephews, each of whom he loved as his own.
A 1964 graduate of Rindge Technical High School, John was later inducted into the school’s Basketball Hall of Fame, a proud recognition of his skill and contributions on the court. Known as one of the hardest-working men you could meet, John often held two or more jobs to support his family. He started his career driving a taxi and working as a caterer at a very young age, but later went on to a fulfilling career as a Systems Analyst with Comm Energy, where he retired after 30 years. After a very brief retirement, he went on to the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) and TD Garden, where he worked as a security guard for another 20 years until his knees couldn't bear it anymore. Those years at the Garden were especially joyful, as they combined his love of sports, music, and people. True to his passion, John also spent many years refereeing at local Boston basketball courts.
Sports remained a central part of John’s life. He found endless joy not only in watching games but also in cheering for his grandchildren—rarely missing a single one. He often stood in for their parents, ensuring his presence was always felt. Traveling was another great passion. He and Linda enjoyed 18 years of cruising the seas together, making memories that their family will treasure. John also loved spending time in Oak Bluffs, Martha’s Vineyard, where he could often be found on “The Wall” along Circuit Ave., his beloved second home.
Always a gentleman, John had a flair for style. He was rarely seen without one of his many hats, and his neatly lined and parted beard became his signature. In Cambridge, “Semp” was known as the man who never missed an event and always found his way to the dance floor. His joy was infectious, his smile stretched ear to ear, and his thoughtfulness left a lasting mark—especially in the annual birthday calls he never failed to make.
To his children, he was simply the best dad. To his grandchildren, he was Grampi—the grandfather who showed up, cheered the loudest, and gave them memories they will carry forever.
John R. Semper will be remembered for his unwavering devotion to family, his passion for life, and the joy he brought to everyone who knew him. His love, laughter, and spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to share in his journey. Truly one of a kind, John will be deeply missed.
