John R. Semper "Semp," born on June 21, 1946, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, to Carol Hendley (Skinner) and James Semper, passed away unexpectedly on August 25, 2025, at the age of 79.
John leaves behind his beloved wife of 58 years, Linda Semper (Bolden) of Brockton, and a large, loving family. He is survived by his children Lisa (Eric), Jolie' (Douglas), Troy (Madalena), and Courtney. His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Jasmine, Troy, Jelani, John, Shannon, Maleia, and great-grandchildren Aria, Preshon, Presleigh, and Kalani, in addition to his siblings, Charlotte Morris, Rodney Semper, and his in-laws, Ife Bolden, Richard (Beverly) Bolden, and Robert (Penny) Bolden. John leaves behind many nieces and nephews whom he loved very much, as if they were his own.
John was a 1964 graduate from Rindge Technical School, where he was later recognized as an inductee into the Basketball Hall of Fame, a testament to his accomplishments and contributions during his time there. One of the hardest-working people you have ever met, John spent most of his life working two jobs or more to support his family. He started his career driving a taxi and working as a caterer at a very young age, but later went on to a fulfilling career as a Systems Analyst with Comm Energy, where he retired after 30 years. After a very brief retirement, he went on to the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) as a Computer Analyst, while also working at TD Garden, where he worked as a security guard for another 20 years until his knees couldn't bear it anymore. John truly enjoyed his time at TD Garden, considering he was an avid sports and music fan and a very social person, it was nothing close to work for him. His love of basketball kept him close to an arena or court most of his life and a reason why he chose to referee at local Boston basketball courts throughout the years.
In addition to his professional achievements, John was passionate about sports, which played a significant role in his life. He derived great joy from playing and watching various games, and especially from watching his grandchildren participate in and share his love for the game. John, in fact, was the grandfather who never missed a game and often would stand in for his children in their absence. Traveling was another of John’s passions; he cherished opportunities to explore new places and create lasting memories with his loved ones, including the 18 years of cruising the open seas with his wife on the many cruises they enjoyed over the years. He could also be found passing the time on "The Wall" on Circuit Ave in Oak Bluffs, MV, his second home.
Always dressed for the occasion, he had a special appreciation for his hats in particular and was also known for the unique way he kept his beard lined and parted. John was a true gentleman. Known around Cambridge simply as "Semp" he never missed a chance to attend an event and would always find his way to the dance floor. One of the happiest and most thoughtful people you may ever meet, John was always smiling from ear to ear, and once he learned your birthdate, you could expect a call every year from him. His children would describe him as the best dad ever, and his grandchildren were blessed to have their Grampi as long as they did.
John R. Semper will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to his family, his passion for life, and his spirit and love will live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege to know him. Truly, one of a kind, all will miss John.
