Theodore Bernard "Teddy" Grant was born in Harlem, New York on December 16, 1951, to Juanita Grant-Harris and Theodore Grant. He spent his formative years attending schools in the Bronx, NY. At the young age of 19, Teddy made the significant decision to join the United States Air Force. During his service, he achieved the rank of Airman 1st Class and became an Athletic Coach, a testament to his leadership and dedication. Teddy was a proud retired veteran who valued his time in the military deeply.
In 1985, Teddy moved to Boston, Massachusetts, where he began working at the VA in Bedford. Soon after, he took a position at the Officers Club on Hanscom Air Force Base. His career progressed when he joined MIT’s Lincoln Laboratory, where he became the supervisor of the Maintenance Department, a role he held for several years and where he was highly respected by colleagues.
Teddy was known for his impeccable sense of style and his love for shopping. He often took quick trips to New York City to find dapper suits and unique dress shoes, always seeking to add something special to his wardrobe. His sharp wit and entrepreneurial spirit were evident in his constant pursuit of new business ideas, and he excelled at turning his concepts into reality. Teddy was also an avid viewer of the television show "Jeopardy!" and was particularly savvy with numbers—so much so that many believed he would have made an excellent accountant.
One of Teddy’s greatest joys was enjoying good food, especially homemade meals. He cherished the dishes prepared by his dear friend Shirley, and his daughter Joi’s spaghetti was among his all-time favorites. Holidays spent at Kristen’s home, the daughter of his best friend Beau, were highlights in Teddy’s life, filled with warmth, family, and homecooked meals. These gatherings were a source of happiness and connection for him.
Teddy’s faith was a cornerstone of his life. Despite facing debilitating health challenges over the years, he remained steadfast in his devotion, seeking comfort and guidance each day. He appreciated the support of those who prayed with him and was never hesitant to reach out for prayer. Teddy found joy in singing psalms of praise, and his deep, rich baritone voice left a lasting impression on all who heard him.
Above all, Teddy cherished his family, recognizing that family is defined not only by blood but by love. He is predeceased by his mother, father, sister Sheila Renee Grant, and dear cousin Sharon Smith. He leaves behind his niece Denise Grant; cousins Trisha Walker and Trina Mangum; his dear friend Shirley McAfee; his son and daughter, Douglas (Kawana) and Joi Furr; seven grandchildren: Judah Grigsby, Isaiah Lewis, Darius Furr, Trequan Furr, Adrian Furr, Warren Furr, and Leila Long; seven “bonus” grandchildren: Kadejaha, Lamonesha, Nycajuia, Doreatha, Elana, Lamont, and Zamya Evans; goddaughters Aubrielle Poirier and Aspen Gilles; his best buddy George (Beau) Harris; special friends Stephen Puopolo, Lynette Wilson, and Denise Williams; as well as a host of many, many friends.
Teddy will be remembered as a man of character, faith, love, and generosity. His legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew him, and he will be truly and forever missed.
