Vernelle
Smalls-Cardona
Apr 20, 1966 — Sep 2, 2026
My Fabulous Life
Vernelle Smalls-Cardona (affectionately known to many as "Five"or "Nelle"), born on April 20, 1966, in Roxbury (Mission Hill), Massachusetts, to Ernelle and Tommie Lee Smalls Jr., passed awayon September 2, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, strength, and joy.
A proud 1984 graduate of Brighton High School, Vernelle showcased her vibrant energy early on as an avid track runner, competing in the 440 and the 440 relay. In 2012, she earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Curry College. She built a dedicated, multi-faceted career, holding positions at the Bank of Boston, the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles, and MASCO.
Her commitment to public service shone brightly during her 26 years at the Boston Police Department, where she served as a Police Clerk to the Information Systems Group, Head Clerk in the Domestic Violence Unit, and Executive Secretary in the Family Justice Division. Socially she was an active member of the Eastern Stars.
Vernelle was a true force to be reckoned with—unapologetically standing her ground and living life entirely HER WAY. That strength was matched only by her gentle, understanding, and loving heart. She was the heart of her home, where she cherished 21 yearsof marriage with her devoted husband, Eddy Cardona, alongsidetheir beloved babies (cats), Lucky and Princess.
Though Vernelle did not have biological children, her maternal instincts knew no bounds. She was a teacher, comedian, dancer, and therapist at heart, serving as a mother figure, auntie, and God Mom to countless people who were blessed by her guidance and warmth. Whether she was lighting up the dance floor, traveling, or bringing everyone together for her infamous Chili Nights, all-day Christmas Breakfasts, or backyard BBQs, her infectious laughter and beautiful spirit brought light to every room.
Vernelle is survived by her loving husband, Eddy Cardona; her parents Ernelle and Tommie Lee Smalls Jr.; her paternal grandmother, Jessie B. Small; her siblings: sister Jessie Mae Smalls-Dudley, brother Sylvester Smalls, brother Calvin Smalls, sister Thomasina Higginbottom (Jerome), and sister Sophia J. Smalls, her in-laws Blanca and Eddy Cardona Sr, along with a host of in-laws, cherished nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by her brothers Mark A. Williams, Anthony Smalls, and James J. Smalls.
Vernelle’s love touched the lives of many, and her unforgettable spirit will remain in the hearts of all who knew her.
